Friends of St George’s Hospital

About us

Before the National Health Service Act in 1946 hospitals were funded entirely by voluntary contributions.

There was however concern about the future role of those that had previously raised funds. Aueurin Bevin, Minister of Health and the British Hospital Association recognised their role was invaluable and wished to encourage an on-going contribution.

The first meeting of over 175 charitable leagues took place on 24th March 1949 at Friends House in London and saw the birth of the National Association of League of Hospital Friends. Since that day the Friends at St Georges have walked side by side with St George's Hospital supporting its staff and caring for its patients.

  • Sky Lights

“The installation of the sky lights on the major trauma ward has brought a sense of peace and calmness. Patients admitted on the ward usually are suffering from the most traumatic time of their life and suffer severe injuries. The addition of the sky lights mean that these patients will be cared for in a calmer, more welcoming environment. It provides a bright scenery for those patients who have limited mobility and otherwise would have been looking at a blank ceiling. I can truly say that the sky lights are my favourite part of the ward and will hugely contribute to a positive experience by all those admitted”
